I Read the Google Agent Guide So You Don't Have To
17 June 2026

A researcher at Google published a free guide on how AI agents actually work. I read it so you don't have to.
An agent is AI that can plan, use tools, and take actions across multiple steps on its own. You describe the goal once, and it works through the steps to get there. Most AI tools today only do the reasoning. Agents connect that reasoning to four layers: what the AI knows, what tools it can access, how it sequences steps, and what it remembers between sessions.
The first section is the one worth your time for a running business. People skip it because it sounds technical.
When all four layers connect, you stop being the one who coordinates everything.
The guide is free and it's the most thorough breakdown of agents I've found.
Comment 'AGENT' and I'll send you the link.
