How to Find the Right Claude Skill and Check It's Safe to Install
8 July 2026

Most Claude skills you find online were built by someone else for someone else's business.
They are not broken. They are just not yours. A skill is a set of instructions Claude follows every time it runs a particular job. Install one and Claude stops guessing and starts working with real context. The problem is that the context was built around someone else's accounts, someone else's tone, someone else's process. Your business runs differently, and a generic skill will keep producing generic output.
The fix is not to delete every skill you find and start from scratch. It is to treat every downloaded skill as a first draft.
Download it. Then open a conversation with Claude and ask it to read the skill back to you and flag anything it does that you would not be comfortable with. That takes thirty seconds. Most people skip it entirely, which is how they end up with a skill pulling data they did not realise it could touch.
Once you have cleared that check, ask Claude to interview you about how your business actually handles that job. It asks the questions. You answer in plain English. It then rewrites the skill using your answers, your categories, your language. A cashflow skill that started generic now pulls your numbers the way your accountant reads them. A writing skill that started with someone else's tone now writes in yours.
I did this with three skills last month. Each one took about ten minutes to adapt. Each one now runs a job my way, every time, without me re-explaining anything.
Download one skill today. Have Claude check it, then have it interview you and make it fit your business.
