OpenAI just admitted Claude was right

OpenAI just rebuilt ChatGPT into the shape Claude has used for ages.

The latest update splits ChatGPT into three modes, Chat, Work, and Codex, inside a brand new desktop app. If that layout looks familiar, it is because Claude already works this way with Chat, Cowork, and Code.

Chat is the quick stuff. A rewrite, a summary, a bit of research.

Work is the mode you should care about. You hand it a proper job, it gathers context from your connected apps and files, breaks the work into steps, and comes back with finished documents, spreadsheets and reports instead of chat replies. It will stay on a job for hours, the way a colleague you briefed would.

Codex is the coding mode, for building and shipping actual software.

Two details worth knowing before you go looking for it. The new desktop app is a separate download from the ChatGPT website, the old app does not simply update into it. And all three modes are on the free plan, which undercuts Claude, where the equivalent features sit behind a paid plan.

The bigger story sits underneath the product news. Every major AI company has stopped building chatbots and started building coworkers, and the two biggest names now agree on what that looks like.
