84% of Claude use isn't coding

Anthropic just published the numbers on what people actually use Claude Cowork for. Coding barely makes the list.

They analysed 1.2 million sessions across more than 600,000 organisations. Software development came in under 9 percent.

The biggest slice, a third of everything, was plain business operations: summarising documents, tidying spreadsheets, the admin that lands on your desk at nine at night because nobody else will own it.

Another 16 percent was writing, the everyday content work every business produces.

Everyone assumes AI's real users are technical people in San Francisco. I hear a version of it from owners every week: "I'm not technical enough for this." The data says the opposite: the heaviest use of one of the most advanced tools on earth is the boring admin work every small business drowns in.

That puts the bar for getting value on the floor. If a third of all usage is summarising documents and cleaning up spreadsheets, you already have the qualifications.

The only real gap is that most owners never start.
