Stop adding random tools to your AI
5 June 2026

The fastest way to make your AI worse is to keep giving it more to do.
Two words are behind most of the clutter, MCP and skill, and most business owners can't tell them apart.
So they switch both on at once, and keep adding more, because more feels like progress. Every extra connection is one more thing the AI has to weigh up before it answers. It ends up doing a worse job of everything.
The fix starts with knowing what you're actually adding.
A skill is a repeatable pattern you hand the AI for a job you do over and over, like writing your client proposals in your tone of voice.
An MCP is the connection that lets the AI reach into the tools you already use, so it can pull your numbers out of Xero and drop a finished report into your Drive.
The skill is the method, the MCP is what lets it act on your business.
Take a report you pull together by hand every month, the kind of job that eats three hours. Build one skill for that one report, and connect it to the two tools it needs, your data source and wherever the finished report lands. Three hours becomes forty minutes.
So before you connect another tool or switch on another skill, pick the one job that's eating your week. Build the skill for that, give it the two tools it needs, and leave the rest off. Get that working before you add a single thing more.
