You're using AI's weakest mode
23 August 2026

Most business owners are a year into AI and still using its weakest mode.
OpenAI and Anthropic have both landed on the same three ways of working with AI, and which one you use matters more than which platform you pay for.
Mode one is chat. You ask questions and it answers them. It's the only mode most owners have ever used.
Mode two is work. Instead of asking a question, you hand over a goal. The AI goes into your files and your connected apps, works through every step, and comes back with the finished result. In Claude's world this is Cowork. OpenAI now literally calls theirs Work.
Mode three is building, where the AI creates whole systems and tools for you. It sounds technical, but I run my business on this mode without being a developer.
The trap is that chat feels productive. You ask, it answers, you copy the answer out and finish the job yourself. A year of that and you've done a year of homework with a very smart encyclopaedia.
A chat answer leaves the work with you. The work mode hands you back the finished thing: the report written, the spreadsheet built, the folder organised.
You're paying the same subscription either way.
This week, pick one job you'd normally chat your way through, and hand the whole thing over instead. Give it the goal and the files and let it come back finished.
Once you've watched a job come back done, chat stops being your default. That's the moment the subscription starts earning its money.
