You're getting better at the wrong AI skill

You're getting better at the wrong AI skill.
Everyone is practising prompts, and prompting is the part that's already fading.
Right now, AI only helps you when you remember to ask. You type the perfect instruction, you get a good answer, and tomorrow you do it all again. You're the engine, and the tool stops working every time you stop working.
The skill worth building is setting up proactive agents. A proactive agent is AI with a standing job. You set it up once, give it one area to watch, like your inbox, your calendar or your numbers, and it comes to you when something matters, instead of waiting for you to come to it.
The first draft of my video script on this was written by Claude overnight, as part of a routine that runs while I sleep. Nobody prompted it. It already had the job, and my job that morning was to review what it wrote. Reviewing a draft is a much smaller job than writing one from a blank page, and I didn't have to remember to start any of it.
When you do still prompt, give the model a goal and room to work, and skip the essay of instructions. The models are strong enough now that over-engineering the prompt tends to slow them down.
So the better question for your business is which jobs deserve a standing agent. Start with the ones that come round every week and only happen when someone remembers to start them.
Pick one of those and set it up this week.
