Why I Now Build Every Claude Skill With an Example File

If you find yourself re-explaining the same thing to Claude every time you start a new task, you have not built a skill yet.

The repeating explanation is the blocker. You describe the format you want. Claude produces something close. You correct it. Next week, you start again from scratch. The AI is capable, but the work of teaching it never stops because nothing you teach it gets stored.

Skills fix this. A skill is a set of instructions Claude follows every time you trigger a specific job. It remembers the format, the tone, the level of detail. You set it once and it runs the same way every time after that.

The fastest way to build a good one is to open Claude, describe the output you want, and end your message with: ask me whatever questions you need to understand this fully. Claude will interview you. Your answers become the skill. It is a much faster way to capture what you actually want than trying to write instructions from scratch.

The part that made the biggest difference in my own skills was adding an example file. I took a proposal I was proud of, a version that had the right tone and the right structure, and stored it inside the skill as a reference. Now every proposal Claude produces matches that example, without me describing the format. The example does the work that words alone cannot.

The first skill takes the most effort. After that, you know exactly what to ask for.
