Three types of people and AI

I have helped hundreds of business owners put AI to work, across Ireland, the UK, America, and Europe. They fall into one of three groups. Knowing which one you are in changes what you should do next.

The sceptics see risk. Risk to jobs, to livelihoods, to the way we live. They look at AI and their first instinct is caution.

The optimists see abundance. AI will free people to do better, more fulfilling work. The benefits will far outweigh the costs.

Then there are the pragmatists. They see both. AI is a tool. It could be used well or badly. They want to understand it enough to make good decisions.

I have worked with all three. The pragmatists tend to move fastest. Not because they know more, but because they are not frozen by fear or carried away by hype. They ask practical questions. What does this do for my team? What does it cost? What breaks if it goes wrong?

Sceptics often stall. They read the headlines, see the dangers clearly, and struggle to act because the risks feel too big. Optimists sometimes chase tools without connecting them to a real problem in their business.

The pragmatists weigh it up. Then they move.

There is no right group. It is how you feel about AI today. But wherever you stand, keep an open mind. The three people actually building AI, Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk, cannot agree on where this is heading.
