Three things to do about AI
12 September 2026

AI is not going away. If you are waiting for it to pass, it will not. So the practical question is what to do about it.
I keep it to three things when I talk to business owners.
Learn. There is no point burying your head in the sand. You will end up using AI whether you choose to or not, and starting now means building your skills on your own terms. You do not need a qualification in machine learning. What you need is enough understanding to use AI effectively and enough understanding to question it when the output looks wrong.
Stay curious. Look for the opportunities in the work you already do. The telephone operators who spotted the switchover early and reskilled into offices and communication roles brought capabilities into those jobs that made them harder to replace. The people who understand their own work deeply and understand what AI can do are the ones who will spot opportunities nobody else can see.
Lean into what makes you human. If AI does become more capable than any one person, there is one domain it cannot own. Relationships. Judgment. Care. The ability to read a room, to know what a client actually needs, to hold a difficult conversation with a team member. Those are human skills. They will only become more valuable as AI handles more of the routine.
I have watched hundreds of business owners go through this process. The ones who are doing well are not the most technical. They are the ones who stayed curious, kept learning, and leaned into the parts of their work that no tool can replicate.
None of this happens by accident. It happens because of the decisions you make now.
