Long Game

Nobody tells you what an AI agent is

Long Game

Everyone's selling you AI agents. Not one of them has explained what an agent actually is.

An agent is AI that takes actions on its own. You give it a goal, and it works through the steps until the job is done. You are not sitting there prompting it line by line. You hand over the job and it gets on with it.

Every agent has three parts. The AI itself, which you already have if you pay for Claude. Access to your stuff, your files, your inbox, your calendar. And a goal, with permission to keep going until the job is finished.

Three things, and you already have the first one.

This week I set Claude up with a folder of client call notes and one goal: turn these into a strategic growth plan. It read the notes, pulled out what we had discussed, wrote a first draft, and left it in the folder for me to review. I did not type a single prompt while it ran.

The technical crowd will tell you agents need special platforms, custom frameworks, and a developer to wire it all together. For a business with fewer than fifty people, they do not. The AI you are already paying for can work like this today. It just needs a proper job instead of another question.

The only intimidating part of an agent is the name. Behind it is a worker that takes a brief and follows it through without being reminded.

Give the AI you are already paying for one full job this week, start to finish.
