I didn't get AI agents

Every explanation of AI agents you have read has left you no clearer on what one actually is. You know they are coming for some of your admin, and you still could not say what one is made of.
Most explanations start with what agents will do to your industry instead of what an agent is built from. So you nod along, you never build one, and the work that could come off your desk stays an idea you keep meaning to look into.
An agent is three parts, and once you see them you cannot unsee them. The brain is the model itself, Claude in my case, the bit that actually thinks. The memory is what it holds from earlier in the same conversation, nothing more mystical than that. The tools are the things the brain is allowed to do, like sending an email or checking a spreadsheet.
A chatbot has the brain and the memory. You pick the tool yourself on every single task, by copying the answer out and pasting it somewhere it can do some good.
An agent has permission to act, and a rule you wrote once telling it how to choose.
Here is one of mine. A client emails about an invoice. The rule says check Airtable for that invoice first, then draft the reply. I wrote that once. Now the agent reads the request, picks the right tool on its own and acts, and I do not open either app.
Set the rule once and it keeps running long after you have forgotten you wrote it.
What I got wrong at the start was trying to build something huge. Pick one job you do the same way every week and write the rule for that one. Building it will teach you more than any course you could buy.
