Don't Open Claude Without Setting Up a Skill First

Most people open Claude and start typing from scratch, every single time. That's where the real cost sits, not in the subscription, but in the repetition.

A Claude skill is a set of instructions you write once for a task you do on repeat. Every time you want that task done, Claude follows the same instructions automatically. You don't even need to activate them manually. Claude works out when you need that skill and applies it. That's the part most people miss. They think they have to trigger everything themselves.

The fix is simpler than most people expect. Think of one thing you ask Claude for every single week: a proposal, a client report, a meeting summary. Open Claude and say: let's build a skill. Describe what you want it to produce. Then end with: ask me whatever you need to make this excellent. Claude interviews you and pulls out the detail it needs to do the job properly. That shift from "prompt and hope" to "brief and build" is what changes the quality of the output.

If you want reports laid out a certain way, paste one in as an example. Claude stores that file and uses it every time the skill runs. The output stops varying. The quality stops depending on how well you remembered to explain things that morning.
