1 in 5 owners hasn't had a week off

Long Game

One in five small business owners hasn't had a full week off in over a year.

That's from a Uswitch survey of a thousand UK small business owners. Seven in ten of them said they feel guilty when they do take time off.

Most of those owners would tell you they want AI to save them time. But "save me time" is a target you can never hit, because you can't tell when you've got there. A few hours back here and there never adds up to a week away.

So the first thing I ask an owner is what the business looks like in twelve months. I want a picture you could check. Two weeks off next August without opening the laptop is a good one, because on the first of September you'll know whether it happened.

Then I ask what would stop that happening. It's usually a short list: the invoices only you chase, the supplier orders only you place, and the questions your team brings to you because the answers live in your head.

Those are your AI jobs.

Each one maps to something AI can take a first pass at. The chasers get drafted for someone else to send. The orders get prepared so a team member can place them. The know-how in your head becomes a written page your team can ask AI about instead of asking you.

Once you have the picture, choosing tools gets simple. Every tool that doesn't get you closer to that fortnight, you can ignore, however clever it looks.

Write down your picture for next year today, in one sentence you could check on a date. Then list the jobs that would stop it.
